The San Diego Padres are a team on a mission while the Cardinals appear to be playing out the string. The Padres entered this contest sitting just 4.5 games behind the Dodgers, and in a fairly safe position to make the playoffs, while St Louis is finishing out a lost season. The Padres jumped on veteran starter Gibson for 2 runs in the first inning and led 7-2 through the fifth which is all young starter Vasquez needed as he surrendered just 2 earned runs through 6 innings in a 7-4 San Diego victory. The Padres are a team nobody wants to face in the playoffs with a very strong lineup top to bottom and the best relief corps in all of baseball. We will be on the Padres often down the stretch.
